Individual Speech-Language Therapy
Every child is unique and requires an individualized approach to improve their speech, language or pragmatic skills. At Wordsmith, we pride ourselves on our dynamic approach to hone specific skills while understanding the whole child. As a communication specialist, we know how important it is to provide treatment that can be transferred outside of the speech session and used in the “real world.” Not only does speech-language therapy improve communication skills, but it also increases self-esteem, independence and academic ability.
The therapeutic approaches your child needs to maximize their potential are derived from decades of experience working with children from a variety of backgrounds and ability levels. Whether your child has a stand-alone speech diagnosis, or other disabilities including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Dyslexia, TBI, ADHD, Cognitive challenges, we have the right tools to help them make progress.
Speech - Language Services in Virtual Schools
Speech-Language services can be contracted directly with schools and districts who are in need of a qualified SLP. All services are provided by a speech-language pathologist with their Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCCs) from ASHA, the national licensing board, as well as licensure to provide services to children residing in California. Bilingual (Spanish-English/French-English) services are offered based on availability. Should your school require virtual speech-language therapy services please send an email or book a phone consultation.
Speech Therapy
Therapy targeting specific speech sounds (i.e. articulation), speech sound patterns (i.e. phonology), motor-based speech disorders (e.g. apraxia) or fluency disorders (e.g. stuttering, cluttering) are provided through multi-sensory instruction. Even in a virtual setting, your child learn visual, tactile and kinesthetic techniques to improve their speech skills.
Language Therapy
Children who struggle to process language are excellent candidates for therapy to target the underlying neurological weaknesses that result in difficulty communicating. Language therapy can target:
Semantic skills including vocabulary building, word retrieval and strengthening knowledge of core linguistic concepts.
Auditory comprehension and auditory processing skills
Language skills relevant to reading and writing
Improving grammar skills at all levels, from short utterances to complex sentences
Verbal expression using customized techniques to train their brain to put their thoughts into words
Critical thinking skills to improve their comprehension and expression
Social Skills Therapy
Social skills are some of the most diverse and essential skills within the area of communication, and can vary significantly from one chid to the next. In an individualized setting your child can make tremendous growth understanding the underlying social rules that we use in our daily lives, learn to “read” emotions and infer thoughts, hold meaningful conversations, predict social outcomes, resolve conflicts in a cooperative way and build self-advocacy skills.
Group Services
Therapy targeting speech, language or social skills in a group setting can be excellent for building communication skills as well as a sense of community. Group sizes are capped at 4 children maximum, although most group sessions include a pair of 2 children with complementary personalities and communication goals. You should expect group services to allow your child ample opportunity to learn, participate and build on the ideas of their communication partners in a supportive environment. Group services are extremely limited in their availability given the careful planning and attention required to find the right partner for your child’s personality, interests and communication skills.
Speech Therapy Sessions are held Monday - Friday from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm depending on scheduling and availability.
Appointments are offered in 30, 45 or 60 minute formats. Children may be given practice activities to complete outside of speech therapy.
Parent or School consultation services are also available upon request.
